Green Tea Anyone?

Type the words “green tea” into any Google search, and you’ll quickly be overwhelmed by the deluge of information touting its many benefits- a cure for cancer, miraculous weight loss drink, secret to immortality..!? Okay, well, not exactly- but here’s some of the amazing things our favorite, antioxidant-rich green has to offer:

BOOSTS ENERGY WITHOUT THE CRASH Green tea contains caffeine, though only about a third to half the amount in a cup of coffee, and L-theanine, a rare amino acid responsible for savory, umami tasting notes, that produces an anti-stress effect. The caffeine and L-theanine combine, creating this sense of calm, alertness. A perfect pick me up without the jitters and that inevitable crash and burn.

SKIN SAVER Green tea has been shown to have numerous positive effects on the skin, helping it stay clear, vibrant, and youthful.
-Sun protection that works from the inside out, green tea neutralizes UV light, protecting against sunburns. Its probably still a good idea to use your usual SPF, but green tea can help enhance the effects.
-Slows signs of aging and reduces appearance of wrinkles. The antioxidants present in green tea have been shown to help reactivate dying and damaged cells.
-The antioxidant Epigallocatechin-3-gallate, more affectionately known as EGCG, helps fights against inflammation, acne, rosacea and other skin conditions.

METABOLISM BOOSTER Put the kettle on before hitting the gym. Green tea has thermogenic properties, meaning it can help raise your metabolic rate while also increasing fat oxidation. Thermogenesis refers to the body’s ability to produce heat as it burns calories, so, the more calories burned, the more heat produced.

FRESHEN UP Catechins, disease fighting antioxidants abundant in green tea, help kill oral bacteria that causes bad breath and tooth decay. Steep up a little freshness after lunch, or try a some green tea mints- we know of some good ones!

KEEP IT HEALTHY Catechins, antioxidants that promote cellular repair, are the major source of those amazing green tea health benefits often cited in articles, lists, or by that “healthy” friend or relative we all have. Said to be responsible for disease prevention, anti-aging, and more, there’s no reason to not load up on these powerful things.  With its antiviral and antibacterial properties (those catechins are at it again), green tea gives your immune system a boost, protecting you against colds and the flu, killing germs that enter through the nose and mouth. Green tea also reduces the risk of more serious conditions like blood clots, high blood pressure, heart disease, even certain cancers and Alzheimer's disease.

SAFE DETOX Chlorophyll is what gives green tea its namesake color. The high chlorophyll content, particularly in matcha, has a detoxifying effect on the body, helping eliminate chemicals and heavy metals from the body.

The laundry list of benefits could go on forever, but its easy to see that drinking green tea can help you become a healthier, calmer, and yes, even slightly better looking person. Experts generally recommend drinking about 4-6 cups a day, but why not get your green tea fix any way you like? Whip up a green tea latte, pop a few green tea mints, or get some daily wellness with Green Tea+C.

NEST has a new line of green tea by Sencha. They offer green tea mints, Matcha power you can add to a smoothie or bake with it and green tea lattes.

THE DANGERS OF SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES...

Maybe you’re like me - you love a clean, fresh smelling home.  Who doesn't, right? There are a few things you need to know about using "natural" products.  Make sure the product is actully natural and safe for you and your family vs. making a claim on a bottle.  We have researched natural cleaning and found the BEST there is, Better Life cleaning products, only at Nest.

There are synthetic fragrances in Method, Mrs. Meyers, Green Works, and many more personal care and cleaning products. However, you will never find synthetic fragrances in Better Life products. It goes against our mission of our products being truly safe and plant-derived. Better Life uses only natural essential oils and extracts to scent our products to offer a subtle scent that is a delightful while scrubbing toilets, tables, floors, or your hands.

Check out the Huffington Post’s “Five Must-Knows on the Dangers of Synthetic Fragrances” by Ava Anderson.

  1.  WHAT is “fragrance?” More than 95 percent of the chemicals in synthetic fragrances are derived from petrochemicals. These chemicals include: benzene derivatives, aldehydes, phthalates, and a slew of other known toxins that are capable of causing cancer, birth defects, nervous-system disorders and allergies—some of which are cited on the EPA’s hazardous waste list.
  2.  WHERE is it hiding? In the U.S., manufacturers can legally hide hundreds of synthetic chemicals in the one word—“fragrance”—without revealing what those ingredients are. It’s referred to as a “trade secret” in the industry. But really, it’s simply a loophole big enough to drive a fuel truck though. This excuse to not label fragrance ingredients was initiated in an era when the major fragrance houses lobbied to protect their secret formulas made from flowers and oils. But those days are long gone. What the government is protecting now are manufacturers who have a license to poison the American public with more than 3,000 chemicals that are being absorbed, inhaled, and ingested daily.
  3.  WHY should I avoid it? Environmental Working Group (EWG) researchers found more than 75 percent of products listing the ingredient “fragrance” contained phthalates (THAL-ates) which have been shown to disrupt hormone activity, reduce sperm counts, and cause reproductive malformation, and have been linked to liver and breast cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Additionally, studies by Dr. Philip J. Landrigan of the Mount Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center, link fetal exposure with autism, ADHD, and neurological disorders.
  4.  HOW do I avoid fragrance? Many of us work hard to make good food choices—such as eating organic and avoiding hormones and GMOs—and we read nutrition labels. But how many of us read the labels of our bottles, sprays, and jars? A majority of personal care products for men, women, and children, along with home-cleaning products, contain “fragrance.” The ingredients in “fragrance” are absorbed into the bloodstream directly though the skin. We advise people to avoid ALL products with the ingredient “fragrance” on the label—including perfumes and colognes, baby lotions and wipes, air fresheners and candles, dryer sheets and detergents, and so on. Even if the front screams “fragrance free,” products can still contain fragrance ingredients as a masking agent to cover unpleasant chemical smells. Read the labels!

The bottom line: Congress has banned some phthalates in toys, but as the recent study above suggests, others have been substituted in their place. Many countries have banned phthalates (EU, Canada, South Korea, Japan, even China). But the U.S. government demands such a high level of proof of harm that many agree it is simply impossible to reach—and our government is slow to respond, banning only a few chemicals in its history.
“Fragrance” is at the top of my “no-no” list. If a manufacturer isn’t willing to list ALL of a product’s ingredients on its label, that’s a deal breaker for me. I hope it is for you, too.
